The Boylan Funeral Home was founded in 1890 when Henry Young came to Evans City from Prospect to begin a furniture and undertaking business. In 1893, his daughter, Mamie, married C. Ferd Hyle and he joined his father-in-law in the business. A few years later, Victor Hyle entered into a partnership with his father, Ferd, and he continued in the business until his father’s death in 1959.

In 1959 Victor Hyle sold the funeral home to Edwin Hanley. Edwin remained in business for one year and then sold to Paul J. Boylan on August 1, 1960.

P.J. served in the Navy during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received as a result of enemy action. He spent seven months recovering from his injuries before being discharged. The following year he enrolled in the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science graduating in 1948. As a licensed Funeral Director, he owned and operated Boylan Funeral Home in Evans City for more than 45 years. He had the privilege of working in the funeral industry with his son, Pat and grandsons, Patrick and Adam before his death on November 7, 2006.

Patrick J. Boylan joined his father in the funeral business in 1971 and the funeral home was enlarged and remodeled the following year. In 1984, Pat took over management and the family opened a second funeral home in the Zelienople community in 1986. Pat remains committed to improving funeral service for the families in the community. His faithful service also includes donating his time to reconstruct the Evans City Cemetery after tornado damage, as well as, donating many granite memorials to the local communities.

In 1991, Patrick J. Boylan II graduated summa cum laude from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and received the John Rebol Award for his outstanding achievement in all branches of the curriculum. Patrick followed his grandfather and father’s example by working with a large funeral home in Pittsburgh. He later joined his family’s business bringing with him the experience he gained.

Adam M. Boylan graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was a starting safety on the IUP Football team for four years and enjoyed the team’s playoff appearances. In January of 2004 Adam graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and joined his grandfather, father, and brother in the family business.

The funeral home now has five licensed funeral directors serving the community.
The funeral directors and staff remain committed to providing families with service and support before, during, and after a funeral.
